CUBE 2021 VISION – WHAT’S NEXT!

CUBE has been on an active journey towards combating powerlessness

Dear CUBE community, friends and longstanding supporters,

x

Before this difficult and hopeful year comes to an end I would like to share my thoughts about our CUBE journey and how we will build more power to change politics.

Did you ever wonder why CUBE is called CUBE? Well let me tell you a little story…

In 2016, when four young freshly graduated women got together to change who in Europe is doing politics, we had one image in mind: a Rubik’s cube. This is how we wanted politics to be. Something which might look complex at times and gives you a headache but with which you will create colourful, diverse solutions. Something everyone puts their hands on and likes to play around with. Something everyone feels like wanting to put their mark on. Something where everyone can change the building blocks of our society one by one…

The CUBE illustrated our vision of young people understanding that they have the power to change politics for the better. From 2016 to 2020 we asked nearly 3000 youngsters in 5 European countries to develop their demands on what needs to change in European politics in order to better their experience. Our Workshop Concept fulfilled our vision, as we shifted the youngsters’ perspective on themselves in having a say and having their experiences be valued in dialogue sessions with the invited politicians.

However, power is more than developing demands and presenting them to politicians. Power is organising your crowd to make sure your demand truly becomes reality. Power is knowing every day, even without a CUBE Workshop, that you have the power to make a difference. Power is knowing that your experiences in society are valid proof of the ways in which our current political system is failing.

So far, our CUBE Workshops were able to ignite discussion on topics and issues that have not always been brought to the table. However, we also realised through the workshops that in many ways young people feel powerless, meaning they do not feel that they are heard, and that they have the capacity to enable change. Through our work so far, CUBE has been on an active journey towards combating powerlessness, but we realise there’s a lot more that is required if we are to build power that is sustainable.  We needed to look back into Europe’s past and to other continents in order to find a concept which does deliver our vision: Grassroots organising.

In Europe we know this mainly from the labour movements. From the US, South Africa and many other countries we know how these methods are able to strengthen and mobilise people to dismantle long-standing structures such as apartheid and segregation of white supremacy.

In close collaboration with the US-based organisation Justice is Global we founded an European chapter. We are providing people with tools to powerfully connect with their base, enabling substantial change which addresses the roots of longstanding systemic oppression. We take personal experiences seriously and mobilise with them for strategical structural change. The vision stays, we are just getting closer to it!
